This month, we sat down with Talent Acquisition Coach & Executive Recruiter Steffan Busch to learn about his journey into the trades, what brought him to Nexstar, and what matters to him the most.

Q: When and where did you get your start in the trades?
A: My grandfather was a plumber, and he taught my father quite a bit. However, my father never got into the trades; nor did I, before Nexstar. I’ve been at Nexstar since 2016 and that has been my biggest exposure to the trades, specifically in residential services.

Q: What brought you to Nexstar?
A: I was living in Denver, where I met my wife. She is from Minnesota, and we decided to relocate here. I was actively looking for a job in the Twin Cities and was connected to Nexstar by a recruiter. I had no idea what Nexstar was until that point.

Q: Is there someone who inspired your journey into the trades?
A: Being a part of Nexstar has inspired me and ignited a passion for this industry. I’ve gained a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation for the trades as a result.

Q: What are some of the career milestones that have been important in guiding you to your role as a coach?
A: Before Nexstar, I was an HR manager who focused primarily on recruiting and employee relations. I worked in multiple industries for companies of many different sizes. That experience taught me a lot about people and a lot of great skills, from identifying and recruiting the right talent to developing strong relationships with leaders and managers. The goal is always the same: Hire better people faster.

Q: What does your typical day look like as a coach?
A: I chat with members in coaching calls to help them hire the best people for the job as quickly and easily as possible. I also headhunt leadership roles for members, so a good portion of my time is spent sourcing candidates, interviewing them and connecting them with the member I’m working on the search with. My team has also launched a new recruitment program for non-leadership staff called NexHire. Click HERE to learn more about it. It’s super awesome!

Q: What’s the best part of your job, and why?
A: There are so many wonderful things about my job, but I would say the best part is helping a member find the right people for their organization, whether it’s coaching them on the process or assisting with the search for talent.

Q: What’s one of your greatest superpowers?
A: I’m able to help people feel comfortable with me very quickly – it’s a combination of humor and charisma. I always say that I’ve never met a stranger! Also, my dad used to tell people that I am without guile!

Q: What do you do to relax when you’re not at work?
A: I’m really into weightlifting, and I’ve got a big love for music – whether I’m singing, playing guitar, or just listening. I’m a total history nerd and love diving into a good book (specifically on history). I take my grilling and meat smoking seriously – same with my bourbon – and believe it or not, yard work is actually super relaxing for me!

Q: What are your passions?
A: I’m passionate about my wife and kids and being there for them. That’s been my purpose. Figuring this out has led me to strive to be a better human.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share?
A: The prosecution rests.

Steffan’s dog, Dolly. And yes, she was 100% named after Dolly Parton!
